The design shown here is a basic mandibular splint typically used for bruxism protection. The occlusal surface is finished smooth with the opposing dentition making equal point contact. Just like a maxillary splint, the occlusal surface can be finished smooth with point contact, with positive facets for opposing dentition, with cuspid rise, and/or anterior guidance to disarticulate the teeth in protrusive movements. A twisted stainless steel wire is placed lingual to the anteriors to add additional strength to the appliance. Note - Careful finishing is required so that each opposing tooth will make equal contact with the acrylic biting surface. To avoid unnecessary chair time adjusting a splint, always provide the lab with an accurate set of working casts and a construction bite that precisely represents the vertical and horizontal occlusal relationship that you want in the final product.
