Many patients have excessive or pendulous tissue in the oral pharyngeal region that obstructs the airway and causes snoring. The Palatal Lift appliance has an adjustable acrylic button that extends distally to the midpoint of the soft palate and gently lifts this tissue, preventing it from vibrating as air passes during sleep. This appliance is hard for most patients to tolerate for any length of time, but when you suspect that the airway obstruction is due to an excessive palatal drape, it might prove useful as a diagnostic tool. Simply have the patient wear it to sleep. If it clears the airway enough for the patient to breathe and his spouse tells you that he didn’t snore, then this may indicate the need for a UPPP surgery. This appliance is rarely used and is shown here to give a historical perspective on the evolution of appliance design.
