All patients who are undergoing extensive restorative work need extra fluoride protection. The simplest and most effective way to deliver this protection is by using a custom tray and 1.1% neutral sodium fluoride. Simply have the patient fill the tray with 1.1% neutral sodium fluoride and wear it for five minutes after they brush and floss. Then take the tray out and have the patient spit out the excess without rinsing. That’s all it takes to give them the extra protection they need. Neutral sodium fluoride is recommended as safest for composites and porcelain restorations. Do not use acidulated fluorides.
