This bruxism splint is palate-free. Although it is not as strong as the full palatal appliance, the open palate design is much more comfortable and allows the patient’s tongue to sit in its normal rest position. Simply put, greater patient comfort leads to better compliance. A twisted stainless steel reinforcement wire is carefully placed across the lingual anterior position of the appliance for added strength. The occlusal surface can be finished in whatever manner desired, i.e. smooth with point contact, positive facets for opposing dentition, cuspid rise, and/or anterior guidance to disarticulate the teeth in protrusive movements. Note - Careful finishing is required so that each opposing tooth will make equal contact with the acrylic biting surface. To avoid unnecessary chair time adjusting a splint, always provide the lab with an accurate set of working casts and a construction bite that precisely represents the vertical and horizontal occlusal relationship that you want in the final product.
