Modified Witzig Splint L

The Witzig Splint is a mandibular splint that is designed to precisely position the mandible and hold the condyles in the ideal physiologic position within the fossa. Like the Levandoski approach, the position is predetermined with the use of precise radiographic records and a unique articulator. First, the Witzig/Denar articulator and face bow transfer are used to mount accurate casts. Then transcranials or tomograms of each joint are taken to precisely determine the position of the condyles in occlusion. Using these radiographs, a tracing along with measurements of the joint complex are completed to determine the ideal physiologic position of the condyles. This information is then transferred to the articulator so that an occlusal record can be generated at the ideal anterior and posterior vertical dimension. This position should be confirmed radiographically prior to making the appliance. The actual appliance is a modification of the Mora/Gelb design. The occlusal surface is finished with positive indentations of the upper posteriors, capturing both the buccal and lingual cusps. Once the patient accommodates to the new position, the occlusal indentations can be reduced if desired.
