By designing a final retainer with an open palate, the patient can wear the appliance 24-hours a day without being concerned that his or her speech will be affected. This is accomplished by placing a posterior palatal strap and lingual acrylic band that supports the anterior teeth. Kevlar fiber is usually added to the acrylic to provide added strength. This open palate design keeps the rugae area open to improve tongue position during speech.
